In 2019, wedding bells are ringing to a different tune.

Compared to the more traditional weddings of the past, the nuptials of today’s brides and grooms are expressions of their individuality, tailored to surprise their guests. That means that some of the customs of the typical American wedding have started to fall by the wayside, while the average cost of a wedding has gone up over the past 10 years.

According to one study, 20% of brides now elect to wear a color other than white on their big day. Another study found that among couples who had a destination wedding, 49% got married 200 miles or more from home.

Why so much change? What do modern weddings look like now? And — on the minds of every newly engaged couple — how much do they cost? In the video above, Life and Money by Citi and Vox teamed up to look at emerging wedding traditions, and the price tags that come with them.
