Birdies have long-held special significance for pro golfer Justin Thomas.

Not only did he make a birdie playing his first-ever hole as a professional golfer, but he did it with his father present at St. Andrews in Scotland — to this day one of his favorite courses.

In recent years, scoring one under par has taken on even more meaning for the 26-year-old. Thomas has teamed up with No Kid Hungry and Citi for the third straight year in order to help end childhood hunger in America. For every birdie he makes during the season, Citi will donate enough for No Kid Hungry to provide 1,000 meals for kids in need.

One in six children in the United States live with hunger. That translates to more than 12 million kids living in “food insecure” homes — meaning those households don’t have enough food for every family member to lead a healthy life. No Kid Hungry is working to end child hunger in America today by ensuring that all children get the healthy food they need every day to thrive.

Thomas aims to create a positive impact through this initiative and beyond. Check out the video above for a behind-the-scenes look at a day on the course with Justin Thomas.
